Christine de Pisan was so famous in her day that the Duke of France simply sent her gold and requested that she write a book for him All this is probably in Wiki Christine married well, had three children, and her husband died To survive, she opened a publishing house, staffed by women Bear in mind that this was before Gutenberg s printing press at Pisan s shop, they made one copy at a time, and to own a book was an indicator of wealth Making a book might take one person months, so books w Christine de Pisan was so famous in her day that the Duke of France simply sent her gold and requested that she write a book for him All this is probably in Wiki Christine married well, had three children, and her husband died To survive, she opened a publishing house, staffed by women Bear in mind that this was before Gutenberg s printing press at Pisan s shop, they made one copy at a time, and to own a book was an indicator of wealth Making a book might take one person months, so books were expensive Every page might be illuminated, made with drawings and paintings around each page, as the books were largely created for the wealthy A quite wealthy home might have seven or eight books A successful book might sell only a few copies but make the writer famous and wealthy Her publishing company was successful, and Pisan herself was their premier writer, showing superb mastery of every form of poetry practiced in that day.Pisan also wrote books one about warfare written under a nom de plume lest the readers know a woman wrote it , one about city government The Book of the City of Ladies where a city is run entirely by women , and The Book of the Duke of True Lovers That last one, if the world were fair to women writers, would be called the first novella, in my opinion Pisan s works were first translated into English not long ago She is another in the long line of great women that history, as written by men, left out Her works are not long, by and large, but they are exquisitely well crafted In The Book of the Duke of True Lovers, Pisan has a remarkable character to appear in the book It is an elder lady who warns the young women involved in courtly love that their reputations and lives may be ruined by the games the men play so willingly Pisan was a great writer She s a free download today, too Another like her is Marie de France These books are not all romances, and Marie de France s one surviving book is a collection of short folk tales, which are brilliant

I read this book for my senior seminar, it was actually one of the better books I read My favorite character in this book is Dame de la Tour and how she addressed the lady s situation Overall to me, this story was a typical courtly romance story.
