Carson McCullers' THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER is an extremely interior novel, its principal subjects being lonely people too selfabsorbed in their own problems and frustrated dreams to reach out to one another Naturally, this is quite hard to dramatize A 1968 film adaptation did an admirable job of it, but it changed quite a bit of the source material to do so I did not expect much of this stage version, but I have to say, Rebecca Gilman did excellent work in converting the novel into a play. She makes the brilliant decision of having all the major settings of the story, such as the New York Cafe, Mr Singer's room, and Dr Copeland's house, onstage at the same time, showing how cloistered all these people are from one another, unaware that they are not alone in their loneliness Projections of images and text also play a large role in making the mute Singer's interior life palpable to the audience. The play isfaithful to the original story than the 1968 movie, retaining the 1930s setting and the harder edge of the characters (most significantly, the Communist sympathies of Dr Copeland and Jake Blount), though it too makes some alterations Some are minor, such as making Mr Singer a middleaged man in his 40s rather than the 32yearold of the novel Others have the effect of making the story less bleak, such as having Biff and Jake form a lasting bond that will continue via letters once Jake leaves town However, Mick and Dr Copeland's stories retain their uncertain conclusions.Of course, I can only say so much about Gilman's work One hasn't really experienced a play until one has seen it performed, either live or through a recording However, the text is very good indeed.
